Willandra Ancestral Remains

From the 1960's to the 1980s approximately 108 Aboriginal Ancestors remains were removed from Country and taken to Canberra for Scientific study without the knowledge or consent of Traditional Owners of the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area. Aboriginal Elders from the Three Tribal Groups of the Willandra have expressed their concerns of the removal of Ancestors from their resting places since the early 70s.

Mungo Women was returned in 1992 and it was not until 2017 that the rest of the Ancestors were returned to the Traditional Owners at Mungo National Park.

Since then the Aboriginal Advisory Group have followed in the footsteps of their Elders to fulfill their wishes to give the Ancestors a dignified reburial back on Country. The first Ancestors to be reburied in 2022 were Mungo Man and Mungo Woman.
